Info: The Nike Run Hit Wonder jogs (haha) through the streets of downtown Portland, to the waterfront and through the still-seedy warehouse district. Every mile or so, a different band performs on stage and a final concert is given at the end featuring the main act. 2005 icons included The Fountains of Wayne (“Stacy’s Mom”), Chingy (“Right Thurr”) and the Donnas (“Take It Off”). Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (“I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll”) headlined. However, contrary to popular belief, the bands do not play the same song over and over, which takes some fun out of event.
With more than 8,000 finishers in its second year of existence, the course isn’t exactly daunting. The 5 and 10k start together, and you can change your distance mid course if you so wish. Due to the popularity of the event, it can take upwards of 15 minutes to creep toward the start line – and an extra 20 to do the first mile, as you’ll probably be forced to walk. The event promoter, AA Sports, provides timing chips. However, if you’re concerned with such things, it’s best to start at the front of the pack and register as an elite runner.
In 2005, Nike put on events in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles as well as Portland.
